Bouncing was written for viola and electronics as part of a collaboration with Maryland-based choreographer/dancer Valerie Durham and violist Sarah Hart and premiered in February of 2010 at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at the University of Maryland. As the title indicates, the piece explores the connections between ricochet bowing in the viola and the physical responses that it provokes in the dancer. The third and last movement of the composition incorporates electronics and, as it happens in other, similar collaborative works, the use of the performing space occupied a central role in the creation of this piece.
